AVM offers users over 120 innovations and improvements with the new FRITZ!OS 6.50. FRITZ!OS, the operating system of FRITZ!Box and other peripheral devices, presents itself in a new user interface design optimized for smartphones, tablets and notebooks. The extensive home network overview, including a central update function for FRITZ! products, is also new. The new FRITZ!OS provides users with useful analyses of the wireless LAN environment. Plus, they benefit from new telephony options like a telephone book blacklist for unwanted calls, new functions for parental controls and general improvements to product security. FRITZ!Fon received new start screens, flexible font sizes and can now show live images from IP intercom systems. Starting this winter, the new FRITZ!Box also provides for comfortable temperatures and supports energy-efficient heating. In combination with a Comet DECT radiator control it can regulate the temperature of your home. The new FRITZ!OS is available free of charge for the FRITZ!Box 7490, 5490, 4020, 6840 LTE and 6820 LTE. Other current FRITZ!Box models will receive the new FRITZ!OS 6.50 shortly.
The new FRITZ!OS 6.50 is the first to feature responsive design. The user interface "http://fritz.box" adapts flexibly to the different browsers on smartphones, tablets, notebooks and computers. Now it is easy to view and operate the user interface no matter what device you use. The user interface also received a fresh new look, yet the menu items and their arrangement remain familiar to users.
The most important innovation of FRITZ!OS 6.50 is its new home network overview featuring a central update function. The user interface provides an overview of all connected devices. These include all wireless, LAN, powerline, DECT, smart home and USB devices. At a single glance users can see whether their connected FRITZ! products are equipped with the latest version of FRITZ!OS. You can start updates directly from here. A new display also shows, for example, whether a network device is connected directly to the FRITZ!Box or via powerline or wireless repeater. What's more, the home network overview helps to identify inactive devices and delete them from the overview of network connections.
The popular parental controls feature of the FRITZ!Box now offers even more flexibility through FRITZ!OS. Surfing time can be extended via tickets for each wireless device. Each ticket extends the online time for 45 minutes. When online time has been exhausted, tickets can be redeemed on the information page in the browser. Users can view their time left and restrictions here (fritz.box/surf.lua). The FRITZ!Box has been improved for operation on DSL connections with FRITZ!OS 6.50. For example, the FRITZ!Box setup and support for VDSL vectoring were optimized. The VPN feature of the FRITZ!Box now allows up to 12 (previously 8) simultaneous, encrypted connections over the Internet. If there are problems with the network access or Internet telephony, the FRITZ!Box notifies the user by lighting the "Info" LED red. The start page of the user interface displays more precise information about the reason for the disruption.
FRITZ!OS 6.50 equips FRITZ!Fon with no less than three new start screens (Answering machine, FRITZ!Box and New calls) featuring different displays and an option to change the font size of menus. The answering machine received a more flexible switching schedule for various greetings. This way FRITZ!Fon can be configured more individually and important information can be viewed more clearly over the new start screens. Innovations for the Smart Home: FRITZ!Fon now supports IP intercom systems on top of analog ones. The image of the visitor appears on the FRITZ!Fon and the user is able to open the door using the phone from anywhere in the home. Plus, the radiator control Comet DECT can be switched via FRITZ!Fon (see also the section "Smart Home: FRITZ!Box turns up the heat"). As to telephony, it is now possible to blacklist entire telephone books to avoid unwanted calls.
For the first time, FRITZ!Box enables temperature control. In combination with the radiator control Comet DECT by Eurotronic, users can establish individual heating profiles for each room. With its vacation switching and daylight saving time functions, open window detection and the adjustments to temperature changes, the FRITZ!Box offers convenient settings for a well-heated home. The radiator control can even be regulated from on the go using the new MyFRITZ!App 2 Beta for Android. FRITZ!OS 6.50 also offers additional ways to include smart plugs in the Smart Home. Starting now, FRITZ!DECT 200 and FRITZ!Powerline 546E can be switched together in a group to regulate the temperature.

Since AVM also optimizes the security of the entire FRITZ! family with every new FRITZ!OS, it is advisable for every user to perform the update. This way All-IP connections can be better protected from unauthorized Internet calls from the home network. The firewall can be operated in stealth mode to prevent ping queries. TLS security has been improved and port 25 received a new filter to block unsecured e-mail dispatch. Increased security for DECT connections is also provided by the new FRITZ!OS through two new encryption mechanisms (early encryption and rekeying).
FRITZ!OS 6.50 is available immediately as a free update for the FRITZ!Box 7490, 5490, 4020, 6840 LTE and 6820 LTE. Other current FRITZ!Box models will receive the new update shortly.
