Fiber optic expansion in Germany: bringing high speeds to homes and businesses

Fiber optics is gaining momentum in Germany and the expansion of fiber optic connections is moving forward with a range of different measures. The fixed line technology of the future brings a number of advantages, which you can find out about in this article.

Expansion plans

2021 is all about fiber optic expansion: companies are investing more in gigabit expansion in Germany than they have for a long time, with investment possibly even increasing in the next few years. 66 percent of German households already have gigabit-enabled networks; In total, that's 31.4 million available gigabit connections.

But also with the construction of new fiber optic lines a new high was reached this year with 2.1 million. The number of FTTB and FTTH connections has grown by almost 40 percent to a total of 7.5 million. In the next few years, this number is set to grow steadily through a number of expansion measures by various telecommunications providers – fiber optics and gigabit connections are therefore very much a trending issue.

The advantages of fiber optics

With fiber optics, data is transmitted over several kilometers using infrared light signals with practically no losses – without being influenced by electrical or magnetic interference. Thanks to technological developments, speeds of significantly more than one gigabit per second are already possible for private customer connections.

In the future, it will be possible to transmit significantly more speeds at very low latency on the same line. Fiber optic is therefore ideal for all real-time, remote working and gaming scenarios. And unlike copper cables, where progress can only be made with a great deal of effort, fiber optics is only just beginning. This makes the technology future-proof.

FRITZ!Box 5530 Fiber for all connection types

AON or GPON: The FRITZ!Box 5530 Fiber can be used directly on both fiber optic connections - without a media converter or upstream provider modem. This is made possible by an integrated slot for fiber optic modules (transceivers) in SFP format. This means that, depending on the connection type, the appropriate plug-in module can be used.
