FRITZ!Box for fiber optic connections
Fiber optic technology, with transmission speeds of several gigabits per second, is generally considered the ultimate solution when it comes to broadband connections. There are a number of different fiber optic technologies – AON (active) and GPON (passive) fibre optic networks are the most common. For both technologies you can find a compatible FRITZ!Box.
Active Optical Network (AON): point-to-point
An active fiber optic network contains "active" components such as switches, routers or multiplexers. This makes the network very robust. In case of problems at the connection at home, the individual components can be actively influenced. The decisive thing for this kind of fiber optic network, however, is that it is structured according to the "point-to-point" system. Each user has their "own line" to the network operator – the cabling forms a graph with the topology of a star. This is good news for the households and businesses on the connection, as they can enjoy full bandwidth without interference or transmission loss.
If you have an Active Optical Network (AON), the FRITZ!Box 5490 is the ideal model for you.
Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON): point-to-multipoint
In a passive optical network, the network operator uses simple, passive components such as optical splitters. The data transmitted by the cables of several end consumers is combined by the passive splitter and then transmitted on the same line to the network provider: point-to-multipoint. That means they're all on one single optical fiber. This means that the passive optical network, like cable networks, is part of a shared medium technology – albeit with multi-gigabit bandwidth.
For passive fiber optic networks, (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks (GPON)), the FRITZ!Box 5491 is available.
By the way: some network providers install fiber optic connections in such a way that only Ethernet is available for the household connection, and not fiber optic. The fiber optic signal is already converted beforehand by an additional device (a fiber optic modem). For example, you can connect a FRITZ!Box 7590 to the fiber optic modem via a LAN cable.
